SAMSUNG ART & DESIGN INSTITUTE

Fostering Samsung's Global Designers

Samsung Art and Design Institute (SADI) was established in order to cultivate designers and improve Korea's design competitiveness. The intensive 3 year program features a stringent curriculum designed to foster a strategic mindset while establishing the skills required to become competitive global designers.

Soft creativities such as design will be a precious asset for corporations, and will be imperative for a company's survival in the 21st century

Following the advent of the 'New Management Initiative' in 1993, design became a core asset for Samsung Electronics. SADI was created in 1995 in order to create a new model for design education in Korea. Corresponding to changes of the times, the school has distinguished itself by creating the perfect balance of three vital elements: excellent students and faculty (Humanware), specialized education programs (Software), and optimal learning environment (Hardware). This trifecta will continue to develop SADI to be recognized as a 'World Renowned Design School in 2020'.

An intense 3-year curriculum

The SADI curriculum focuses on the essential subjects of design. The 3 year program (3 trimesters per year) allows for the perfect balance of liberal arts and design majors.

  • A multi-dimensional program created from the best teaching methodologies.

SADI's curriculum boasts an inter-departmental curriculum that organically connects all areas of study, creating a truly multi-dimensional program. Throughout the program, students will strengthen their design capabilities as they are exposed to all areas of SADI, creating a brighter future for the next generation of Korean designers.

  • On-site Professional Seminars and Academic Opportunities

SADI's curriculum features direct contact with working professionals in order to cultivate students that meet the needs of the industry. By bringing in industry professionals as faculty members, practical design theory immediately becomes an integral part of the educational experience

  • Synergy among various majors

The inclusion of non-design majors has established a unique learning atmosphere at SADI. While design students tend to be more emotional in their thinking, the inclusion of non-design majors allow students to understand rational thinking processes, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the program.

  • International Bridge Program

SADI students are privileged to network with the international design elite through global exchanges and a variety of international events. Various seminars, collectives, and workshops give students the opportunity to better understand international design.

SADI CURRICULUM

  • foundation

Foundation courses allow students to develop critical problem-solving skills and express design sensibility based on the basic principles and elements of design. The classes are mandatory for both non-design and design majors as it provides them with fundamental skills that can be applied in any field.

  • Communication Design

The development of IT Technology has caused an increase in the demand for strategic communication, including high-quality visual communication. Communication Design combines design methodologies with techniques used to deliver information through visual language effectively.

  • fashion Design

The Fashion Design Department operates in a critique-style, allowing students to learn the basic qualities of being a fashion designer while receiving feedback from famed industry professionals. By providing the same environment that would be found within the industry, students will graduate equipped with valuable insight and expertise in the fashion world.

  • product Design

The Product Design department embarks on practical education projects that develop students' creative design and integrative thinking skills. Many companies, including Samsung Electronics, provide educational resources for product design in order to create a truly specialized education.

  1. 1/ Founded in 1995, SADI will soon celebrate its 20th anniversary. What do you think about the outcome of SADI so far?

SADI has achieved remarkable results during its relatively short 20 year history. Our students' abilities are gaining international recognition, having received over 100 accolades including IDEA Design Awards, iF Design Awards, Red Dot Design Awards and more. In addition, over 1,000 alumni are employed by global enterprises specializing in fashion, communication, and product design.

  2. 2/ What do you think are the strengths of SADI?

Although there are a large number of design schools, SADI is well known for its 'Dynamic Education '. Not only does SADI utilize exclusive teaching methods, but SADI's faculty are respected and accomplished within their fields. In order to gain access to the latest industry trends and develop a practical business sense, SADI students participate in collaborations with numerous professional companies. The 2nd Semester of the third year consists of an internship program to enhance the student's practical adaptive skills. For 4 weeks students learn about various occupations in design agencies, including Samsung affiliates, in order to help them determine their career path. While traditional universities do not require an internship period, SADI requires students to complete the 4-week internship program before graduating.

  3. 3/ What do you think about the skill level of SADI students in the professional industry?

The value of a SADI graduate becomes easily noticeable 3-4 years after they graduate. As time goes by, they quickly become an integral part of the design industry. In recent years, SADI graduates have attracted the attention of global businesses, Hollywood, and even gone on to create their own brands. In order to attain status as a 'World Renowned Design School in 2020', SADI offers its students a more convenient educational environment by incorporating Samsung's Smart School Program in cooperation with a number of design institutions, letting students expand their educational opportunities.

  1. 1/ There are so many universities. Why did you choose SADI?

During my childhood I spent most of my time drawing cartoons. I learned about SADI after contemplating about a career in design, even though I didn't have a design background. I was impressed that SADI was able to look beyond basic admission criteria and evaluate an individual based on their personality and potential. SADI is well known for accepting new students without biases toward educational background, gender, age, and work experience. One of SADI's greatest strengths is the 'Synergy between design and non-design majors', and 'Educational opportunities for non-designer majors' that provide limitless opportunities for students interested in all kinds of subjects.

  2. 2/ What did you learn at SADI? What are its strengths compared to other universities?

SADI is less restrictive than other programs, catering to the student's personal style and time frame. At SADI, the high-density design education nurtures students that are passionate and skilled. With its advanced curriculum and strong backgrounds from all different fields, SADI is the bridge that connects passionate and aspiring designers to their dream career.

Samsung Electronics is very supportive by providing a state-of-the-art learning environment along with a wide range of scholarship support. 1. 1/ What is the reputation of SADI graduates in the design industry? What are your own thoughts?

It can be difficult to assess a co-worker, but it seems that SADI graduates have a good reputation within our company. SADI graduates have earned prominent roles and reputations in a wide range of fields including Product Design, UX & UI Design, Material Design, and many others.

  2. 2/ Is there anything you want to say to younger designers?

I was exposed to design later than most people. SADI is a great opportunity for those who have backgrounds outside of design. If you focus on your passions and weaknesses and continue to develop your designs, you will see good results. Be bold, and never give up.
