Superheroes are in. We love to read and watch as they fight for peace, liberty and justice against the machinations of evil and tyranny. Recently, such platitudes and storylines have been playing out not on 4-color print but through cutting edge technology on the silver screen theaters! And it hasn't stopped with just movies; games, action figures and an entire community of fans and enthusiasts have come together all over the world around this popular cultural phenomenon.

Riding at the top of this wave is Marvel's the Avengers series of movies. Based on the Marvel comic series created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby , the series' unique worldview coupled with the dynamic chemistry of the superhero team members and the gigantic scale of the riveting action has fast become the newest genre to dominate the global box office. The second movie of the franchise, The Avengers: Age of Ultron shook the movie world when it was released globally earlier this year. Many viewers were amazed at the multiple locations the movie took place in – but especially the crucial scenes filmed in Seoul, Korea excited many of us. In addition , if you were looking closely, it's also exciting to know that the high-tech smart devices used by the heroes in battling Ultron both face-to-face but also in the cyber world are familiar to us as well.

The communication devices worn by the superheroes, specifically the Avengers' Watch, Avengers' Bluetooth Device and Tony Stark's smart device was developed in close collaboration with the movie producers and the Samsung Electronic Top Secret Hero Testing Lab, or otherwise known as the design team. Their challenge was to come up with devices that effectively reflect the dynamic and futuristic theme of the movie, while also being convincing and credible as advanced communication links that superheroes would use even during tense, chaotic battle scenes.

From the outset, the underlying intent was to express the technological advancement in Samsung digital devices to it's fullest potential without overshadowing the characters in the movie. To achieve this, we had to create a unified theme in terms of design, color and materials. Meteorites, one of the strongest materials in the universe, were first identified as a motif for our 'Metal of Power' concept and were applied to the design of the devices. During the brainstorming for the design, we also selected 'Arc' as an additional keyword. Not only was it appropriate in conveying the bended screen or the curved line of the Samsung Galaxy S6 devices, but it also hinted at the Arc Reactor technology that sustains Tony Stark's heart in the movie.

The Tony Stark Device uses a high density laminated glass for maximum resolution and transparency. Both the Avenger's Watch and Bluetooth Device are wearable devices and so were made from titanium metal for lightweight, high durability in the battlefield. The Flexible Bended Screen allows for quick and easy communication with other team members. All three devices have the Bended Glass incorporated into the design as well as the appropriate user interaction technology. Of course, you may assume that all this is hypothetical, matching the fiction of a superhero movie. However, these devices are much closer to reality than you may think; the technologies shown in the Avengers movie are already being developed and refined by Samsung. The transparent screen on the Tony Stark Device for example, is technology that is already available. Readjusting the main frame and durability of the device is all that is needed to put this device into production. To emphasize the Bended Screen technology (already existing on the Galaxy S6 Edge), other elements were reduced to a minimum on all three devices.

This collaboration with Marvel Studios opened a unique opportunity to introduce Samsung's products to a younger audience in a truly unique setting. Not only props for a movie, but reaching out to audiences with our technological and design innovation through content development, promotional campaigns, character and content marketing and further expanding into other areas of opportunity to connect with the fans.

It's always engrossing to imagine the future. Especially for us here at Samsung, how we will interact with our devices in the future is a matter of utmost importance. However, imagination and hypothetical scenarios without any real world application is not our realm of creativity. The Avengers Concept Devices are designs based on actual technological platforms, with minute details that are considered not only in the context of the movie but in real life situations. That's why the design of our Avengers themed devices is based on actual technology platforms, with just a few minor details added to make them fit the context of both the movie and real life situations. For us, this is how we imagine the future; we combine cutting-edge product performance with functions, solutions and ideas that bring our imagination to life. Our collaboration with Marvel Studios has given us a unique opportunity to create designs for the future.
