UNUSUAL COMBINATIONS

An industry university cooperation project between Samsung Electronics and students of Industrial & Information Design at Korea University

In 2013 Samsung Electronics collaborated with the Department of Industrial & Information Design at Korea University to develop projects that create meaning and value. ‘Unusual Combinations’ are designs that combine unexpected processes with peculiar shapes. The two groups worked together to give users the opportunity to explore fun and new experiences. The projects emphasize the application of unique materials, structures, and interaction that blend design and technology.

Expansion of Materials

PAPER PLANET

Egg-shaped speakers handcrafted from paper hover in the air to give the illusion of stars floating in a galaxy. Users simply hold the speaker up to their ear to listen to music. The combination of origami and music create a unique experience.

Forms were created that change according to the pitch, frequency, and range of surrounding music. Using internal hair dryers, a special algorithm changes the direction, temperature, and amount of air used to fill the forms.

JOYFUL BROCHURE

The concepts of paper and water-resistance were combined to create waterproof paper. The brochure provides a new experience by taking advantage of special circumstances and environments, like an amusement park.

TRANSPARENT TRAMPOLINE

The trampoline utilizes a transparent surface to give users the feeling of floating on air. A sound effect is created each time a person jumps, adding an additional element of fun.

SUPER BOARD

The transparent skateboard is designed to change color according to the outside temperature. The deck’s color will change when a wire attached to the end of the board becomes heated.

ELECTROSTATIC LAMP

Reflecting lights that resemble deep sea creatures harness static electricity to create continuously fluid movements. The lights provide a unique level of involvement by reacting to user’s hand movements.

BLOOMING LIGHT

A light that uses a flowering movement to mimic the rising sun. When turned off the light resembles a flower bud that blooms once the light turns on. The design uses organic shapes that resemble nature to provide visual comfort to users.
