Designers

2020 in Hindsight, 2021 in Hopefulness

This is a key visual image of ‘Letters from Samsung designers’ contents.

Double Twenty. The year 2020 was as significant and intense as the impression of the number itself. People who transcended both their nationality and gender fought against common difficulties and faced drastic changes by living life differently from before. Despite social adjustments, life continued. In the midst of all of this, we made precious memories with loved ones, self-fulfillment, and happiness within our respective places. Through these messages from Samsung designers, we reflect on the meaning of the year 2020 and envision a brighter new year.

Keywords for 2020

Many faced both small and significant changes during the year of 2020, and each responded in their own way. Through the keywords of 2020 selected by Samsung designers, we observed what this year meant for the daily lives as an individual and a designer.

  • Paradigm Shift

    Modern day practices like working
    from home, online meetings,
    contactless payments have been
modified in new ways while the shift
    to digital accelerated.

Eunbi Kim | Corporate Design Center
  • Pause

    Life plans, travel, mass consumerism,
the economy, even at one stage
    carbon emissions seemed to pause.
It was also an opportunity to
    understand what was essential
and what messages I needed to
    convey as a designer.

    Sian Philippa Ware | SDE
  • Reset

We had to renew the foundation
for all tasks and redefine our goals
    because of the rapidly changing
    market environment, services,
    and consumers.

Hyori Park | Corporate Design Center
  • Patience

We must be patient! I’ve restrained
    myself from exhibitions, performances,
    and gatherings. I instead gained
a lot of second-hand experience by
    browsing through design books
    and magazines online.

Youngwha Oh | Mobile Communications Business
  • Sweet Dreams

    Everything’s tough now,
but it’s an opportunity to have
    an ideal dream with expectations
    for a new world.

Hyeryoung Lee | Corporate Design Center
  • Alacrity

It was impressive to see how each
country grasped the nature of the
    problem and quickly
solutions to cope with the crisis.
    The design process works quite
    similarly this way.

    Haegang Jeong | C-Lab
  • See You Next Time

It was a year when the simple
greeting ‘see you next time’ felt
    renewed. It made me rethink
    the intrinsic value of human
    interaction.

Myungwoo Nam | Mobile Communications Business
  • Retrain

Staying at home because of COVID-19
has forced me to learn a lot of
household tasks that helped my self-
improvement. I found more time to
invest in personal growth, and as a
designer I have been expanding my
design domain by learning new skills.

    Sushant Rajendra Darake | SDD
  • Warm-Heart

    The social environment was
unpleasant, but I was able to see the
    warm-hearted side of my colleagues
which really moved me during these
    challenging times.

Yonggu Lee | Mobile Communications Business
  • Mask

    I reinstated not long ago,
and it was a bit saddening to have to
greet my colleagues with masks on.
I hope the day we can greet each other
    face-to-face comes soon.

Sunhye Lee | Digital Appliances Business
  • Stay at Home

I originally like spending time at home,
but my time at home has increased
even more. It was an opportunity
to seriously contemplate on the house,
    space, and my home life.

Sangchul Yi | Corporate Design Center
  • Parenting

Because of COVID-19, I was at home
with the kids all day during my
    paternity leave. It was challenging,
but I was able to become closer
    to my family.

Heejae Choi | Corporate Design Center
  • Beyond Systems

I am breaking belief systems and
    learning alternative healing methods
    like Bach Flower Remedies and
    Meridians Fundamentals. A designer
can be a healer too – after all,
the purpose of design is to enrich lives.

    Vikas Chopra | SDD
  • Selflessness

    Consideration was the most important
keyword for both work and daily life.
I’ve always been in a rush while living
a busy life but was finally able to
    set things down and relax.

Seokyoung Kang | Corporate Design Center
  • Care

This year pushed us to reflect about
care in both an inward and an outward
perspective. It invited us to rethink
    our self-care, physically and mentally,
and also forced us to discuss how
we should be taking care of others.

    Andre Felipe Tanaka | SDLA
  • Unpredictable

No one could have predicted the
    current situation a year ago,
and everything is up in the air.
I decided to focus more on the essence
of human desires rather than trends
    that come and go.

    Masaya Kato | SDJ
  • Connected

I realized more than ever that people
all over the world are on the same boat.
    The philosophy of ‘Altruism’,
    which pursues happiness and welfare
for both individuals and the collective
    society, has become more significant.

Jongwook Choi | Corporate Design Center
  • Far & Close

    Offline education has been replaced
    by online. For effective communication
and education, we developed a program
    and performed several tests to
    increase the level of completion.

Chanhee Han | Corporate Design Center
  • Flexibility

    Flexibility is needed everywhere.
It has asked me to go with the flow
instead of against it and be more
mindful, which is the same with
    design ideas.

    Ceverine Girard | SDE
  • 20th

I joined the company in 2000 and this
    year marks the 20th anniversary.
The number 20 is quite meaningful
    for me.

Sangsoo Lee | Mobile Communications Business

    in the new year.

    Gowoon Kim | Networks Business
  • With You

No matter how good your skills are,
    you can’t impress anyone without
any consideration. I want the user
    to feel comfortable and considered
    when using a product.

Hyunmi Park | Mobile Communications Business
  • Spontaneity

    Due to unpredicted situations,
impulsive decision making is a key
aspect that makes all the difference.
    Last-minute decisions can sometimes
    create surprising results.

    Katta Krishna Kumar | SDD
  • Clearly Summarize

    The ability to clearly summarize
complex concepts. I often need to
    clarify complicated issues and
    various subjects in the designing
    process, and any wrong interpretation
can the disrupt the entire message.

    Giulia Redi | SDE
  • Personal Space

I want to design a service

    it is also about WE.

    Harsh Vardhan Upadhyay | SDD

    Sustainability has become the most
    important topic of design and
    everyday life. From a long-term
    perspective, we plan to practice
    sustainability by devising measures
    to save time and resources.

    Suyin Li | SDC
  • Expectation

These days, products are exposed by
the media or various channels even
before their launch. In the process,
    we’d like to amplify customer
    expectations through design and have
them feel the excitement of using a
    product after purchase.

Juwon Cho | Visual Display Business
  • Positive Energy

In order to overcome difficult situations
effectively, you need to be full of energy.
The power of positivity is reflected
    in the results of design.

Eunhye Choi | Corporate Design Center
  • Broaden Our Horizons

    There’s a sense of accomplishment
    when you expand the boundary
of learning. I wish to deliver
    satisfaction and fulfillment by
    expanding the user’s experience
    through design.

Kaei Kim | Corporate Design Center
