The Convergence Design Project between ‘Samsung Design Membership’ and ‘Samsung Software Membership’ was held at Samsung D’light on August 27th-28th under the theme ‘Creative Pool: Synchronized’. This project aims to encourage talent going beyond their respective fields, bringing together almost 110 students from both programs in a two-month long project, and then revealing the results to the public.
Both programs are the representative programs of Samsung Electronics’ Human Resource Training for university students in Korea. The Samsung Design Membership has been supported integrated critical thinking and creativity among students since 1993 in order to cultivate new designers. Meanwhile, the Samsung Software Membership was launched in 1991 to encourage engineering students to become passionate and professional software developers.
This year, 74 students from ‘Design Membership’ and 35 from ‘Software Membership’ were divided into 14 different teams to conduct their projects. The aim was to show how the focus would shift from being technology-centered to human-centered in the future. The results of the project actually operate, and the exhibit showcases a variety of products ranging from wearable devices, to Internet of Things(IoT), and the divices that increase accessibility for the disabled.
A piece called ‘Dowell’ is a smartphone app that is designed for people with limited upper body movement, allowing them to use their smartphone simply with the help of their aid equipment (head control, eyeball mouse) without having to touch the device. ‘Airjam’ utilizes a wearable band with a gesture-based interface that plays music using gyro-sensors and EMGs. Once the user wears the wearable band, the service will play the tunes via the user’s gestures so that they can play along with an ensemble.
Boo-Keun Yoon, President of Samsung Electronics expressed that "Convergence is not about creating something from scratch, but rather, creating new values by combining what already existed before," and added that he hopes the "students can grow to become the future talent in the field of convergence."
