At the ‘IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards) 2018,’ the world’s most prestigious international design competition hosted by the ‘IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America),’ Samsung Electronics won 49 awards including one Gold Award, six Silver Awards, and two Bronze Awards. It is the most IDEA prizes the company has won in a single year.
The ‘IDEA Design Awards’ first started in 1980 hosted by the IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America). It is the most influential design competition in the North American region that takes design innovation, user experience, and social contribution as the most important criteria in their evaluation process.
The ‘Wireless Audio Visual Identity System,’ the recipient of this year’s Gold Award, is part of a branding system that communicates a consistent message to Millennials expressed through powerful audio sounds and unique visuals of distinctive designs.
The ‘Dual Cook Flex™,’ the recipient of a Silver Award, is an oven that gives the option to have two individual cooking spaces in which users can cook two separate meals simultaneously. It also adds user convenience through the integrated ‘Flex Door,’ which allows users to selectively open the upper door or the entire door based on their needs. In addition, the following products have also received the honor of the Silver Award: the premium built-in ‘Chef Collection’ kitchen appliance package that brings exceptional technology and state-of-the-art design together; the ‘Galaxy ESN Smart Phone’, a handheld mobile device that can be used for calling or radio communication in disaster situations; the ‘CJ79 Thunderbolt™ 3 Curved Monitor’ that magnifies user immersion through a curved design comfortable to the eyes; ‘The Frame’, which is an all-new beautiful TV experience that brings walls to life with its “Art Mode” that incorporates new inspiration into everyday life; and finally the ‘VL5/VL3 Wireless Audio Series’ that greatly enhanced intuitive usability through a touch wheel on the top.
Furthermore, Samsung Electronics won two Bronze Awards. The ‘Galaxy S8/S8+’ that offers comfort through perfect and harmonious balance coupled with the ‘Galaxy Note8’ that materializes unprecedented note experience through the S Pen won a Bronze Award. Lastly, ‘The Frame V.I.S’ that established the Visual Identity System through a combination of typography and illustrations, which was a never-before-seen feat that deeply resonated with the Millennials, also garnered a Bronze Award.
Dontae Lee, Executive Vice President and Center Leader of the Corporate Design Center at Samsung Electronics remarked, “With consumer-focused innovation, we will continue to strive for designs that can create meaningful value in the everyday lives of our customers.”
