On April 20th, CHI 2015 was held in Seoul, Korea which is the first city to hold CHI in Asia. The theme for this year’s CHI was 'Crossing.'
CHI(The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems) is a forum formed by ACM(Association for Computing Machinery). ACM was founded in 1947 and it’s the world’s first international society for professionals, academics and students who are interested in human-technology & human-computer interaction(HCI). Each year, SIGCHI, ACM’s core program, hosts CHI.
Since 1982, almost 3,000 researchers in the field of UX/HCI gather from around the world each year with a goal of presenting their thesis at the forum.
This year Samsung Design Membership & Software Membership have generated attraction with the four products that embrace Samsung’s design philosophy, 'Inspired by humans, creating the future.'
'AIRJAM' maximizes one’s music playing experience with a wearable band topped with EMG(Electromyogram) sensor which take signals from users’ instrument playing gestures such as guitar, drum and transfer them in to musical sound. 'DOWELL' is a smartphone application for people with upper limb disabilities. The app syncs with various existing computer assistive devices and therefore provides smartphone control solution for the disabled.
'SOUNDTAP' is a rear touch system that recognizes user’s tap patterns. One can set various patterns to execute functions such as opening a browser, playing music, and etc. Last but not least, 'REALBOOK' turns texts into visual images and audio sounds on the TV screen when a user taps on the book.
In delivering his keynote speech, Donghoon Chang, Executive VP of Samsung Corporate Design Center, compared UX design in the era of IoT to a process of preparing the royal Korean dish by the king’s servants during the Chosun dynasty.
As the servants prepare the dish with their utmost consideration, Chang says UX design should be made to satisfy the customer of today.
He said, "Consumer are considered to be the king these days and the ultimate goal of the IoT service is to provide optimized concierge services to individuals."
He also added, "The future of IoT will continue to unlock new opportunities through sensor-enabled devices to extend user benefits. Smarter technologies will transform our lives for the better but what’s more important is that we need to develop a 'coexistence model' across diverse cultural contexts and domains that can overcome any obstacle."
