We are surrounded by the term ‘Smart’. It is used for products, technology, and services that improve our lives. For anything to be considered ‘Smart’, it must possess a constant attribute that provides convenience and optimization for its users. During the 2012 Milan Design Week, Samsung Electronics envisioned a future where lifestyles will be interwoven with new technology in their exhibition ‘Life/Installed, 4 minutes to think of the future’. In collaboration with architect and designer Italo Rota, Samsung created a virtual reality experience that demonstrated their vision for a futuristic home environment.

The walkthrough at the Samsung installation consisted of 6 inter-connected rooms which were painted entirely grey. Visitors were encouraged to animate the exhibiting space by using the distributed Samsung tablets featuring a special application. The app plays back 360 degree videos of the 6 rooms, enriched ideas about the use of next generation technology. The vibrancy of the digital realm was a dramatic contrast from the gray interior, enhancing the user’s immersion in the virtual space. Life/Installed showcased Samsung’s vision for a futuristic home that is harmoniously blended with technology.
Samsung Electronics’ design philosophy is rooted in creating products that are meaningful to customers. By using a unique cultural approach, they presented a new kind of lifestyle at the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair. Samsung Electronics defines their design sensibility as simply people-oriented.
