On February 27th, in Munich, Germany, Samsung Electronics shook the design world by receiving

48 awards at this year’s iF Design Awards ceremony. Samsung received a total of seven gold awards,

setting a new record as the recipient of the most gold awards this year.

This year, Samsung garnered awards from virtually every design field; for Product Design — 5 gold and 34

awards, Communication Design — 1 gold and 4 awards, and 1 gold with 3 recognitions for Concept Design.

Let’s meet this year’s gold winners:

The curved design gives an equal viewing experience from every angle

of the screen. Without any image distortion, the curvature conveys the

feeling of a gentle, comfortable hug. The matching curve of the display,

together with the curved stand adds a dynamic to the look of the

product itself. AeroStand, the uniquely shaped metallic stand

creates the illusion of the screen floating in mid air, drawing

the focus to the screen. In line with Samsung’s design

approach to create the highest value for our users,

the design of the TV itself demands another

glance, even when it is turned off.

The ergonomically designed Gear VR, combines with

the high-resolution Galaxy Note 4 for an experience that

transcends time, space even your wildest imagination.

Upon connecting the device with your touch pad controls

and content accessibility are simple and intuitive.

The 96° viewing angle offers an overwhelming

sense of immersion, while the foam cushion ensures

the device is comfortable and snug for as long as you

have them on. The main head band that keeps the Gear

VR in place, as well as the top band are all made of Lycra

allowing an unobtrusive, ideal fit for anyone. The Gear VR

is also equipped to accommodate users of varying eyesight.

A wearable form-factor device that functions like a necklace,

complete with a magnetic clasp mechanism for your stylish

freedom. The housing’s touch method and magnetic clasp

help users control the device intuitively to receive phone

calls or play music. The Gear Circle also receives voice

commands, providing an integrated seamless experience

and a smart freedom lifestyle. The mix and match of the

rubber and the metallic housing provide a comfortable,

 yet high-end appearance.

This LED lamp adjusts its tilt and swivel to illuminate specific areas of the house.

The home owner can adjust the position of this spot light lamp to point at virtually

anywhere in the home. The lamp is designed with a ball hinge insert allowing a

360° rotation for a focal point stage like atmosphere, or a more calm, relaxed

indirect setting. The Swivel PAR38 is an eco-friendly lamp that hints at the idea

of high-tech through a streamlined, minimal, slim layout.

The smallest A3 black & white and color photocopier of its kind,

a high-performance office essential for daily print, copy, and fax

needs. For those accustomed to the mobile

environment, the 10.1" touch LCD panel offers easy-access

capabilities for its diverse range of functions. The design of the

MX4 series is based on the ideal that "form follows function" or

how we like to put it, the "split design concept": the two major

components of the MX4 are clearly distinguished by color,

shape and position — the upper part interacts with the user and

receives commands while the lower storage components

house the engine and feeds the paper. The contrasting tones of

the machine blend well in the office environment not only offer-

ing a distinctive functional edge but retaining a sense of ele-

gance unseen in a copy machine of its kind.

A communication toolkit for the crystal blue door washing machine, the

WW9000. The toolkit is comprised of storybook, short concept video, and

images for communicating the unique design strategy and value of an

otherwise mundane, but necessary, household appliance. This Design Story

Toolkit was sent out to all the Samsung global offices to be effectively used

for offline media such as catalogues, exhibitions, and advertisements, as well

as online media including web sources and social networking services to

convey a consistent yet wholly unique brand presence for the WW9000

 washing machine.

A bended surface mobile device with the display slipping

over the edge offers endless interface possibilities for a

unique and innovative communication experience. Users

can access functions through the shortcut menu displayed

on the screen edge, bended to about 70° for optimal viewing.

The real innovation is that the device itself does not need to

be unlocked to access this shortcut menu, both the main and

edge screens are interconnected allowing quick and easy

access to your call or content. The bended surface eliminates

the home button, which also eliminates the top or bottom

configuration of the device itself providing ambidextrous

usability for left and right-handed users. The streamlined

shape makes the phone easier to pick up from even smooth

surfaces and gives a comfortable grip.
