Design Strategy
Design strategy is a job of defining design concepts and directions based on objectives and clear insights, along with presenting specific implementation guides including UX strategies. Since this job consists of conducting professional research and deriving meaningful insights, understanding users and design thinking are required. We visualize insights to communicate internally and externally to establish a mid-to-long term roadmap that supports strategic decisions after our goals are set. Develop into a design expert who proposes innovative values such as battlefields, AI, and robots through data analysis and research.

The Design Strategy Group is responsible for planning tasks and establishing design strategies, such as design concepts and directions. Based on a deep understanding of users, we plan tasks by searching for new opportunities while anticipating the changes in the market, technology, and social culture. In this process, we carry out initiatives in product and interaction design, as well as product planning and development while formulating strategies and defining concepts to design experiences that customers want. I am mainly in charge of strategies for future products and experiences.
There is a diverse group of people who not only majored in design but in other fields as well. Some majored in sociology or ergonomics to gain better insight into people, while others studied design after majoring in engineering. Of course, having a solid understanding of technology is helpful when carrying out future-oriented assignments. There are also business majors and those who comes from advertising or the automobile industry. It is fascinating to work with the strengths of others and acknowledge this diversity.
It is a project called ‘Screen Experience’ that I was part of in 2015. It was an innovative project about proposing a concept of a screen in the future, and I still remember how we worked on it. We joined the Visual Display Business and formed a single team, then reported directly to the Business Lead. The leads gave us full support, and we had everything we needed to concentrate on the project that led to great results. I also felt I grew personally through the project as well.
Design is no longer only about emphasizing aesthetics or being limited to one function. To design and create the experience that people want, we need to work with various departments to search for the best solution. Technology is constantly improving, and new products are emerging. I believe designers should be the center of innovation for the people. Someone who is creative and convergent is preferred.
Since good results cannot be expected merely from well-developed plans, the process of developing ideas together and producing results is essential. Therefore, communication skills are above everything else. You must be able to persuade the other party when needed, coordinate according to disagreements, and create synergy. We must admit our differences to communicate better with one another. Remember to be aware of other people’s point of view and speak in their language, not just your own. Additionally, developing skills in humanities are important since they require an understanding of people.
