Capturing Meaningful Moments

In December 2012 Samsung held an exhibition titled ‘Chronovision’ at Samsung d’light in Seocho-dong. Chronovision demonstrated the design message of Samsung Electronics using the concept ‘Make It Meaningful’. The collaboration stemmed from the efforts of Samsung Electronics’ Design Management Center and media artist group, Everyware.

Seven TV’s mounted with cameras from different eras were displayed behind a large media wall. Each screen chronicled the evolution of television sets, from the monochrome to the latest Smart TV. The cameras automatically responded to users looking at the screen by taking a photo of their face. Photos were piled up on the large media-wall, creating an additional virtual space behind the physical TV screens. Using interactive kiosks, viewers could share their photos and experiences with the installation via email and social networks.

MOST THINGS CHANGE OVER TIME, BUT SOME REMAIN

Each TV showcased the evolution of Samsung Electronics’ design and technology while also evoking a different moment of life. Users could reflect on their own nostalgic moments when viewing monochrome television, or create new experiences by interacting with the latest Smart TV. The televisions were placed in a way that let users imagine the future generation of televisions. We cannot predict the future direction of design and technology, but some things will remain certain. The TVs and cameras will continue to capture meaningful moments.

Insights into the past, present, and future

Design was once believed to be a matter of function, appearance, and sensitivity. Now it serves as a way to make our lives more meaningful. By experiencing Chronovision, visitors were reminded of their own precious moments in life. They gained insights into their own past, present, and future.
