The kitchen has become a hub for our homes. It sits adjacent to our living rooms, tearing down the boundaries between our living spaces and no longer limits its role to just cooking and eating. Kitchens today serve as a shared space where families gather to commune, have fun, and express their individualities. With this evolution of the kitchen, its appliances also take new leaps. The refrigerator is now placed in short reach of the family, and with the introduction of door screens and IoT features through Family Hub in 2016, the refrigerator game has changed forever. The fridge now lets us enjoy art, entertainment, and even shopping.

In 2023, Family Hub comes back in a new shape and form, known as the ‘Plus’. The larger 32-inch display and the wide array of features are jampacked with the thoughtful ideas and innovations of designers. The Bespoke 4-Door Flex™ Refrigerator with Family Hub™+ truly pioneers new lifestyles that directly impact our lives in bigger and more joyful ways, and here are some of our designers’ deliberations that made this possible.

A New Flow Between the Kitchen and its Fridge

We are staying at home for longer times following the pandemic, which naturally led to more creative ways to spend time at home. Kitchens were no longer just for eating or cooking, but had to accommodate for family communication, hobbies, and other spatial needs we had in our everyday lives. The refrigerator plays the perfect partner to the new roles of the kitchen, and becomes a platform that provides the services we need to align with these new lifestyles. Family Hub™+ reflects on these changes and new flows, and the larger display is there to provide the expanded experiences that accompany the change.

The Bigger the Screen, the More Details Required

Bigger screens requires a lot more attention to detail. The 32-inch display needed to be accessible by children or users in wheelchairs, so the bottom portion of the display was positioned to be mindful of these user needs. The top of the display got higher, but the Accessible Screen feature lets users tap the home button twice to bring down the top portion of the screen. A lot of care was also put into the panel surrounding the screen to make sure the details in the boundaries were smooth. The mic holes on the bottom were also moved upwards so that every detail in what we need to see or what we don’t are precisely designed into the form.

How is it more thoughtful?

A lot of thought was put into creating a refrigerator design that can harmonize with its surrounding space and appliances.

Adding Tangible Taste in Every Touch

A wide variety of panel materials are available for users to choose the refrigerator that feels best to their touch. The satin glass is velvety in its texture, offering both comfort and glow, while the glam glass brightens the environment with its high-gloss surface. Metal embodies Millennial sentiments through a subtle, monotone finish. It’s also worth mentioning that panels are easily replaced, so that one simple refrigerator base can support a wide range of styles.

Visual Comfort

We designed an appliance that carries the vibe of furniture. The intention of the design is to instill the emotions toward a beautiful piece of furniture in users when they are using the refrigerator, both from the outside and the inside. The inner mood light* is placed widely apart to put more emphasis to the stored food. Lighting is spread out evenly through the insides of the refrigerator to give visual comfort and also help users easily access the innermost parts of the fridge.

The mood light feature is only available for models sold in South Korea.

The refrigerator door is mostly closed throughout the day. Instead of wasting that empty space we so often gaze at, why don’t we hang up a lovely piece of art to remind us of what brings us joy every time we pass the fridge? Family Hub™+ collaborates with famed galleries and artists to offer a wide selection of Atelier* pieces to further accommodate our delicate and diverse preferences in art. The artwork are organized based on year, theme, and movement to help users easily pick out their favorite styles.

The Atelier can become a beautiful frame of its own, or even an in-house exhibition. Invitation letters are sent out when new galleries open, which can be accepted and enjoyed through the hub display. Let the Atelier fill your space with art that suits the day and mood, all through a bigger display.

Seamless Experiences

There must be a constant stream of content in spaces that serve as the family hub. Family Hub™+ and its bigger display now lets families multi-task while enjoying their favorite contents. The popular Samsung TV Plus* can now be moved within the screen to the top, middle, or bottom portions to be at eye-level with the viewer. The PIP(Picture in Picture) feature also helps users use the rest of the screen to surf the web or search for recipes.

Family Hub™+ is not just limited to TV. Mobile contents can be streamed using Smart View without compromising on screen ratios. This lets families share contents on their mobile devices with each other in real-time. Families can pull up photos on the Family Hub™+ display through the Gallery app or Google Photos to share them with each other on the spot. These bountiful content experiences will enrich every moment you spend in the kitchen.

The 32-inch display shows bigger widgets that each lets you monitor and control the various devices of your home. Furthermore, SmartThings services* like Cooking, Clothing Care, Home Care, Pet Care, Energy, Air Care are all easily within reach to lift off the burdens of your day.

Smarter Cooking

You might sometimes find yourself looking through the fridge to salvage whatever is there to cook dinner for the family. These situations call for the Cooking Board. The SmartThings Cooking service provides recipes based on the available food and cooking appliances available in your kitchen. It also sends optimized cooking directions to your appliances to make sure the temperatures and cooking durations are just right. The recipe service, one of the features of the SmartThings Cooking service, gives you a snapshot of the steps you need for each recipe. Cooking on your own should no longer be a daunting task, as long as you have the hub.

What should you do when you’re strapped for time on the way to work and you’re out of food for dinner? Now you can easily reorder your repeated purchases with the click of a button on the refrigerator door with the Amazon Your Essentials.* You can look up the item through the widget on the home screen and check the details on a card-type UI. Shopping through the refrigerator is now easier than ever.

In hindsight, the refrigerator has always played a bigger role in our lives than just storing food. The fridge door has always been a window to family communication, whether it was through sticky notes, our favorite magnets, or an exhibition of our children’s latest artwork. The Family Hub™+ designers aspired to channel this analog sentiment into this product while also carefully crafting every detail to provide the most optimized experience for the kitchen environment. A designer’s profound deliberation is behind every expanded experience we enjoy on the bigger screen.
