‘Flows: A Journey to the Future’ takes the audience on a journey from the present into the unknown future. On one hand, this so-called journey is the culmination of Samsung Design’s philosophy, which seeks to explore new possibilities found through human observations. At the same time, the journey shows Samsung’s willingness to innovate, to open a new future for Home Appliances. The exhibition consists of four parts: Present, Deconstruction of the Present, Evolution, and Future. The five key products that welcome the audience in the Present metaphorically express Samsung’s willingness passion to innovate through creative deconstruction. Then, in the Evolution process, the deconstructed components connect with the digital world, breaking up into smaller pieces as they flow into the future. Eventually, the pieces become fragments of ideas and thoughts, allowing the audience to discover the future’s possibilities.
A journey into the future starts by facing the current innovation. Five representative Samsung appliances greet the audience in midair. Designed to add extra value to our daily lives, the Food Showcase Refrigerator, WW9000 Washing Machine, Motion Sync Vacuum Cleaner, Built-in Oven, and Triangle Rac Air Conditioner each represent the existing innovation and serve as the starting point of the journey.
Innovation undergoes creative disruption to prepare for the journey ahead. The deconstructed components and elements spread out wide into midair, and the pieces are strategically arranged to give the illusion that they are flowing. Just like river streams flowing into the ocean, the pieces are drawn into the display screen, thus moving into the Evolution phase.
The deconstructed components evolve as they enter a world of digital innovation. The deconstructed parts and components dissolve into smaller pieces as they pass through multiple screens installed along the evolution path of the journey. The pieces from the present flow into the screen, evolving into digital elements, and then they finally culminate in a big screen. The entire journey is highlighted by the LED lights installed around the screens. As if to show Samsung’s Design DNA, hidden beneath the hard exterior of electronic products, the dissolving pieces symbolize Samsung moving towards an innovative future.
The Future is the final stage of the Journey, and at the same time, it is another beginning. At the end of the journey an interactive screen representing the future awaits the audience. Once you move your hand in front of the screen, small particles which were once product components from the Present form five messages expressing Samsung’s Design philosophy. Through this hand motion at the end of the journey, the audience discovers new possibilities and values presented by Samsung.
